What is ISDN?

When will my ISDN service cease?

Telstra has announced the end of sales for ISDN commencing January 31, 2018, with an end of life for ISDN services by 2022. In addition, your ISDN will likely be disconnected when the NBN service is rolled out in your area.

What’s replacing ISDN?

SIP or Session Initiated Protocol offers a number of advantages to businesses looking to move on from ISDN. It uses Voice over IP (VoIP) to bring together voice and data services, which automatically saves you money by eliminating the cost of line rental and reducing voice call costs.

What are the advantages of SIP?

  • It’s cost effective, numerous individual ISDN line interfaces can be replaced by a single IP link, eliminating the cost of line rental. Internal calls that remain within the business’s MPLS network avoid charges from telecommunications providers
  • It’s scalable, adapting quickly to your business’s changing needs. If you have a new starter, no need to wait to set-up a new line, it can be done instantly, with no physical set-up required
  • It’s flexible, phone lines are not tied to physical locations, so calls can be diverted to different offices instantly, which is great for disaster recovery, or managing call overflow

What next?

Be prepared, with the NBN rollout underway and the ISDN cutoff fast approaching, you need to ensure your business is ready to make the switch. Currently, ISDN to SIP migrations take Telstra approximately 12 weeks. Telstra has around 150,000 ISDN services, so if you get stuck in the queue, you may be cut off before you are transitioned to SIP and may lose your telephone numbers, which would be catastrophic for your business.
